Our Benchmarks
For Uganda, the first question is who holds the licence and what it covers for a trader in Kampala. OctaFX reaches Ugandan clients through Octa Markets Ltd, an offshore entity registered in Mwali, Comoros, under a MISA licence. There is no Uganda CMA licence behind it.
| Platform | Runs on | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| OctaTrader | - | Trading and account management |
| MT4 | - | Forex and CFDs, expert advisors |
| MT5 | - | Multi-asset, more timeframes |
That fact shapes everything below. Most brokers serving Uganda sit in the same position: CMA's public register of licensed firms lists no online forex or CFD broker, even though the licensing category has existed under the CMA (Amendment) Act 2016. Residents trade offshore almost by default. The honest comparison is not "local vs offshore" - it is which offshore entity, under which supervisor, with what checks.
Our scoring weighs six things: licence tier and supervisor, client money handling, spread and fee transparency, platform depth, funding routes that work from Uganda, and how the broker behaves when something goes wrong.
Is OctaFX regulated in Uganda?
No Uganda CMA licence. Ugandan clients are onboarded under the offshore Octa Markets Ltd entity, supervised by the Mwali International Services Authority in the Comoros. The CMA licensed-firms register lists no online or non-dealing forex broker. CMA publishes a standing fraud warning and requires anyone offering capital markets services to hold a valid licence, so an offshore-only setup means no local supervisor stands behind your account.

What is the minimum deposit?
USD 25. That is the floor across Micro on MT4, Pro on MT5 and OctaTrader. Many brokers serving Uganda ask USD 100 or more to open a live account, while a handful go lower. The practical catch is that a USD 25 account is USD-denominated, not UGX.
How much leverage can I get?
Up to 1:1000 offshore. Uganda sets no retail leverage cap because no active licensing regime enforces one, so the ceiling is whatever the offshore broker decides. Most offshore brokers used in the region sit between 1:500 and 1:1000, which puts OctaFX at the top of the common range. At 1:1000, a 0.1% adverse move against a fully margined position wipes out the margin.
Can I deposit with mobile money?
MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money are the dominant funding routes across offshore brokers serving Uganda, and mobile money is commonly cited for OctaFX. We could not verify the live OctaFX mobile money flow at review, so treat that as unconfirmed and test with a small amount first. MTN and Airtel transfers usually land in minutes; card and bank wires take 1-5 business days.
Account And Cost Profile
Spread-only pricing, no commission, three account routes.
| Account | Platform | Min deposit | Pricing model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro | MT4 | USD 25 | Spread-only |
| Pro | MT5 | USD 25 | Spread-only |
| OctaTrader | OctaTrader | USD 25 | Spread-only |
Spreads start from around 0.6 pip with zero commission. The industry standard for spread-only accounts is roughly 1.0 pip on XAU/USD, with commission-based accounts in the 0.0-0.3 pip range plus USD 3-7 per lot. The headline number is competitive, slightly better than the typical spread-only offer, and it avoids the commission accounting that trips up newer traders. The trade-off is that spread-only pricing hides cost inside the spread, which is harder to audit than a separate commission line.
Deposits and withdrawals carry a USD 25 minimum. That is below the USD 50-100 minimum many brokers apply for bank withdrawals, which matters for smaller accounts. Currency conversion is the quiet cost: accounts are USD or EUR, and no UGX account is verified at review, so every deposit and withdrawal crosses a UGX-USD conversion, usually with the broker's own spread built in.
Where It Sits Versus Peers
| Dimension | OctaFX | Common market practice |
|---|---|---|
| Local licence | None (MISA, Comoros) | None for nearly all UG-serving brokers |
| Min deposit | USD 25 | USD 10-100 typical |
| Swap-free | All accounts by default | Optional on request at most brokers |
| Platforms | MT4, MT5, OctaTrader | MT4/MT5 usually, own platform rarely |
| Promotions | 50% deposit bonus | 20-100% bonuses common |
| Bonus condition | Eligibility rules apply | Turnover conditions standard |
Two points stand out. First, swap-free by default across every account is unusual: most brokers offer a swap-free account as a request, and several charge an administration fee for it. For Ugandan Muslim traders, who make up roughly 14% of the population, this removes a step that other brokers require. Second, the platform line-up is broader than typical because OctaTrader is proprietary and sits alongside MT4 and MT5.
The 50% deposit bonus is competitive with market norms, but bonuses carry turnover conditions. Read them before depositing.
Offshore regulation and its practical limits
The regulatory position. Octa Markets Ltd is licensed offshore in the Comoros, and there is no Ugandan supervisor standing between you and that entity. In practice: no local complaint channel, no CMA-mandated leverage cap, and no compensation scheme if the firm fails. That is not unique to OctaFX - it is the shape of the market for nearly every broker serving Uganda. Your protection comes from the broker's own conduct, so the entity's history is your real risk gauge.

The reputation history. An India Enforcement Directorate probe connected to a Ponzi-style scheme, and reported withdrawal failures, appear in the public record for this brand. That does not automatically mean Ugandan clients face the same outcome, but it is the kind of item that should push you toward smaller test withdrawals before committing real capital, whichever offshore broker you choose.
Funding friction is a third, smaller point. Mobile money is fast, but UGX conversion applies on both legs, and withdrawal processing times are not something we could verify. Uganda's capital account is liberalised, so moving money in and out is not restricted, though banks apply AML checks on larger transfers and large cross-border cash must be declared.
Compare The Regulator First
Regulation tier is the single strongest predictor of how you will be treated when a withdrawal stalls or a dispute arises. Offshore MISA registration is at the permissive end: light reporting duties, no retail leverage cap, no investor compensation. A licence from FCA, CySEC, ASIC or FSCA sits at the other end, with segregated client funds, capital adequacy rules, complaints schemes and audits you can look up. If two brokers offer the same spreads and platforms, and one operates under a tier-one supervisor while the other does not, the spread difference is rarely worth the gap in protection.

That is not a reason to avoid offshore brokers wholesale. It is a reason to run the comparison you already run for spreads against the licence too. Ask which entity holds your account and which regulator supervises it. Then ask what that regulator does when a client complains. The answer is usually one page long and public.
Is OctaFX Right For You
Choose it whenyou want a low entry point - USD 25 gets you live on MT4, MT5 or OctaTrader - with no commission to track and swap-free terms on every account by default. It fits traders who value a long operating history, back to 2011, a wide instrument list covering FX, metals, indices, commodities and crypto and stock CFDs, and who accept offshore supervision as the market norm in Uganda.
Reconsider whenyour priority is the strongest possible regulator behind your funds, or you need UGX-denominated accounting to avoid double conversion costs. Traders who want a supervisor with a formal complaints escalation path, or who plan to hold serious balances rather than test positions, are better served comparing brokers licensed under FCA, CySEC, ASIC or FSCA before committing. Those brokers exist and serve Uganda.
What To Recheck Later
Two items are worth re-verifying yourself in six months. First, the CMA licensed-firms register at cmauganda.co.ug: if a retail forex licensing category ever gets populated, the local picture changes for everyone, and that register is where it will show up first. Second, the OctaFX funding terms: mobile money support, minimums and withdrawal processing times are the parts most likely to shift, and our own verification of the mobile money route was incomplete at review.
On tax, nothing about the broker changes your obligation. URA treats regularly earned forex and CFD profit as business income under progressive resident rates, and Uganda taxes residents on worldwide income, which includes offshore-broker gains. Rates as of this review run from 0% up to UGX 2,820,000 through a 30% band to UGX 120,000,000, plus a 40% surcharge above that. Get a TIN through URA eTax and keep statements. The broker will not file for you.
