Trading costs come down to two numbers: the spread you pay on entry and the swap you pay to hold a position overnight. At OctaFX, the second number is zero. Every account type, including Micro and Pro on MT4/MT5, runs swap-free by default. That is a structural difference from most competitors, not a temporary promotion.
The industry standard is to charge or credit swap on positions held past 5 PM New York time. A typical broker applies a daily rate based on the interest rate differential between the two currencies in the pair, plus a markup of roughly 0.1-0.5% annually. For a position held for weeks, swap accumulates into a measurable drag on returns. OctaFX removes that variable entirely.
For traders in Uganda, where roughly 14% of the population is Muslim, swap-free is a real feature rather than a marketing footnote. But it also affects anyone running a swing or position strategy, regardless of background. Not paying swap changes the math of holding trades over days or weeks.
What swap-free covers
OctaFX applies swap-free status to all accounts by default. You do not need to request it, convert an existing account, or provide proof of religious affiliation. The policy covers the full instrument list: FX, metals, indices, commodities, crypto and stock CFDs.
| Account type | Platform | Swap status | Minimum deposit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro | MT4 | Swap-free | USD 25 |
| Pro | MT5 | Swap-free | USD 25 |
| OctaTrader | Web/App | Swap-free | USD 25 |
The cost structure is spread-only, from about 0.6 pips with zero commission. Most brokers in the same category advertise swap-free as an optional account type with conditions attached, often after 7-14 days or only for specific instruments. OctaFX makes it the default, which is more generous than the standard.
Compare this with the broader Uganda market. Of 28 brokers covered in our data, 19 offer an Islamic account. Most of them require you to select it at signup or request conversion via support. OctaFX is in the minority that builds it into every account from the start.
How swap affects trade P&L
Swap applies to positions left open through the daily rollover point at 5 PM New York time. It is charged on Wednesday as three times the usual rate to account for the weekend, and most brokers also apply a smaller triple charge on Friday for weekend holding.
With zero swap, these mechanics do not apply. A position held from Monday to Friday accumulates no rollover costs, and Wednesday's triple swap is not a factor either.
The practical difference: a trader running a AUD/USD position of 1 standard lot for 30 days would typically pay somewhere between USD 30 and USD 90 in swap at a standard broker, depending on the direction and the rate. At OctaFX that cost is zero. At 10 positions per month, the annualised saving becomes meaningful.
Where the cost actually sits
Swap-free is a benefit, but it is worth reading the rest of the fee structure. Because OctaFX charges no commission, the spread is the only cost you pay per trade. The starting point of 0.6 pips is competitive. For context, the average AUD/USD spread across the retail brokers we track is around 0.7-1.2 pips for standard accounts, with commission-based ECN accounts below that but with a separate fee per lot.
The trade-off is leverage and regulation. OctaFX serves Uganda clients through offshore Octa Markets Ltd (Mwali, Comoros), with leverage up to 1:1000. There is no Uganda CMA licence, and the regulatory framework in Uganda has not licensed any retail online forex broker as of the review date. The CMA register lists only securities-business participants, not online forex firms.
What this means in practice: you are using an offshore entity regulated in a jurisdiction with less oversight than, say, CySEC or FCA. The broker has been operating since 2011 and rebranded from OctaFX to Octa, but the India ED has investigated the entity over a PMLA/Ponzi probe with reported withdrawal failures. That is a reputation flag worth weighing, not a reason to assume the worst.
The funding side in UGX
Accounts are denominated in USD or EUR. There is no verified UGX account option, so you will convert UGX to USD when funding and back when withdrawing. That exposes you to the UGX-USD spread, which is typically 1-3% at mobile money operators or banks.
Deposits can be made via MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money, which dominate the Ugandan market, plus bank wire and Visa/Mastercard. The minimum is USD 25. Mobile money transactions usually clear in minutes, while card and bank transfers can take 1-5 business days.
Comparing swap conditions in Uganda
The table below shows how OctaFX stacks against the brokers most commonly used by Ugandan traders.
| Broker | Swap-free availability | Default swap-free | Regulation for UG | Min deposit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OctaFX | All accounts | Yes | Offshore (Comoros) | USD 25 |
| Exness | Islamic account option | No | FSCA, CySEC | USD 10 |
| XM | Islamic account option | No | CySEC, FSCA | USD 5 |
| FXTM | Islamic account option | No | CySEC, FSCA | USD 10 |
| Pepperstone | Islamic account option | No | FCA, CySEC, ASIC | USD 200 |
The industry standard is clear: swap-free is an option you select, not the default. OctaFX flips that convention. For a trader who holds positions for more than a few days, this removes a recurring cost that competitors typically charge.

Losses are the default outcome
The swap-free structure does not change the fundamental distribution of outcomes. Data across brokers consistently shows that a majority of retail CFD traders lose money. High leverage at 1:1000 amplifies both gains and losses, and a 0.25% adverse move can wipe out a position if you use full leverage.
Uganda has no local regulatory leverage cap for offshore brokers, which means leverage is determined by the broker, not the regulator. The absence of a cap is not a reason to use maximum leverage; it is a reason to calculate position sizes carefully.
| Leverage used | Margin for 0.1 lot AUD/USD | Adverse move to lose 100% of margin |
|---|---|---|
| 1:100 | USD 113 | 1.1% |
| 1:400 | USD 28 | 0.28% |
| 1:1000 | USD 11 | 0.11% |
The math is unforgiving at higher leverage. Swap-free helps you lose less on holding costs, but it does not protect you from leverage-driven losses.
What we think
OctaFX is a reasonable choice for a trader who wants swap-free by default, low minimum deposit, and competitive spreads without commission. The broker's spread-only model from 0.6 pips is above average for the market, and the 25 USD minimum makes it accessible for testing strategies with small capital.
The caveats are the offshore structure and the reputation flags. There is no local Uganda CMA licence, no effective local oversight, and the India ED probe is a documented red flag. For a trader who values strong regulation over convenience, a broker with an FCA or CySEC licence may be worth the higher minimum deposit and the requirement to request a swap-free account.
Choose it when: you want swap-free without conditional approval, plan to hold positions for days or weeks, and can manage the UGX-USD conversion cost on deposits and withdrawals.
Reconsider when: regulatory oversight matters more than cost structure. If you prefer the stronger frameworks of FCA, CySEC, or ASIC, the swap-free option at a regulated broker is a small price to pay for clearer recourse.
The swap trap in fine print
The most common mistake we see among Ugandan traders is assuming swap-free means no holding costs at all. At OctaFX there are no swap charges, but the spread widens on less liquid pairs and during volatile sessions. A wider spread functions like a hidden cost, even when swap is zero.
The second issue is the double conversion cost. Funding in UGX, converting to USD, and converting back at withdrawal can eat more than the swap you save. For a trader making frequent deposits, this is the real cost to track.
The third trap is ignoring the reputation history. Withdrawal failures have been reported in association with the India probe. We cannot verify the current status, but we can note that due diligence on withdrawal requests is part of responsible trading.
